Installing UPVC Double Glazed Windows in New Homes

For new homes, installing UPVC double glazed windows often involves using aluminium brackets, which measure 120mm x 40mm x 5mm, to secure the windows to the brick structure. Brackets are first attached to the windows before they are positioned into the aperture.

Tools Required:

Ensure the size, style, and position of the double glazed windows align with your order before starting the bracket installation. Installation is not recommended unless the window is at least 10mm smaller than the opening on each side. Attach the brackets with 30mm screws, ensuring the window is level throughout the installation. Strategically place the brackets 100mm from the top and bottom of the window, with additional brackets spaced 350-400mm apart. The bracket quantity depends on the window size.

Fitting New Double Glazed Windows:

Use 60mm screws for attaching the brackets to the brick. Installing the window involves a two-step process: firstly, horizontally level the window using packers to reach the desired height, and secondly, stabilize the window vertically with packers to avoid any tilting. Initially, tighten screws lightly, and only fully tighten them after starting all screw points. If the window bends, adjust by loosening screws, adding packers, and retightening.

Sealing New Double Glazed Windows and Doors for Insulation:

To fully benefit from the energy efficiency of UPVC double glazed windows, it is crucial to apply expandable foam around the window to eliminate any gaps. This sealing process not only enhances noise reduction but also secures the window against weather elements. If the exterior is finished, silicon usage is optional. However, if the brick is exposed, silicon is essential to seal and protect the expandable foam from sun damage. Internally, brackets may be hidden with gyprock or decorative reveals depending on the specifications. Our team is available for consultations to provide guidance through any stage of the installation.

Glazing of New Double Glazed Windows and Doors:

Due to the weight and complexity of double glazed units, it is important to handle them with care to prevent injuries. Necessary tools include:

Start by placing glass/glazing packers, ideally 5-7mm thick, at the bottom of the frame/sash to raise and center the glass within the window. An off-center glass unit will detract from the window's modern appearance. Ensure the glass is evenly spaced at the top and bottom, using side packers to maintain alignment. Attach glass packers with glue or silicon at about one-third the height of the glass pane, using suction cups to adjust its position as needed. Secure the glass by tapping the surrounding glazing bead or strips with a hammer.

Final Step of Installation for Double Glazed Windows and Doors:

For operable panels, attach handles and hinge covers. Test the functionality of each double glazed window or door by opening and closing it several times to ensure it operates smoothly without undue force and seals tightly when closed. Proper alignment of the sash with the frame is crucial, with no gaps visible. If issues arise, adjust the installation as needed. Regularly test the sash's operation to confirm a smooth and comfortable user experience, making adjustments based on user preferences.
