Measuring Your Window

The only man who behaves sensibly is my tailor, he takes my measurements anew every time he sees me, while all the rest go on with their old measurements and expect me to fit them.
-- George Bernard Shaw

The most important part of the installation procedure for double glazed windows and doors, comes before you even order your windows. It is critical that you measure your old window opening properly and accurately. Pvc double glazed windows and doors are custom-built and can't be returned if the size ordered was inaccurate. This is why for all replacement windows and doors and some new constructions, our trained technicians will take their own measurements before manufacture. All of our double glazed windows and doors are manufactured to a high accuracy, so ideally you should get the closest fit possible.

The following instructions can be used for cost estimating purposes only:
To measure the width, take size of frame wall-to-wall, in three places-near the top of the window, at the middle and close to the bottom. Consider if you want to keep the same number of openings, and if the size allows for it. To measure the height, also measure from top of the window cavity to the bottom.

Don't assume that all your windows are the same size. Draw a rough sketch of your house and number each window you plan to replace, then measure each of them separately. If you have a number of fixed panels, which are separated by a beam or brickwork - they are considered separate double glazed window panels and are priced accordingly.

Remember that we don't have any standard windows and doors in stock, and we manufacture each window and door to your individual specifications.

It is customary to report your sizes in millimeters, width first, but to avoid confusion it is advisable to always label the sizes with width and length and the window number and/or location. Generally, there is no significant difference in sizes taken by clients and us, so as to affect the price. We would, generally, bear the cost of any marginal rounding or measurement errors, however, this does not extend to accidental omission of half the window length.

Sealing

Many people have the impression that all silicone gels on the market are the same, but we have found that their properties and, therefore, suitability varies dramatically. Generally, the descriptions of silicone offer little information as to the correct grade and type for a given application, and because of performance variability, there is no one type of silicone sealant that should be used for everything. Using the incorrect silicone or improper use may cause joint failure, contamination of surfaces because of poor application, excessive movement in the sealed joint.   Extra information about double glazed sealing can be found here

Draft Proof

There are significant savings in electricity that will pay for your windows in 6-7 years and will reduce your CO2 emissions by about 100-150kg per year. For an indication of energy efficiency of a window or door, look for the U-value or R-value. U-value measures the overall heat transfer coefficient, or how well the window/door conducts heat and is also the inverse of the R-value. The lower the U-value, the greater a window's resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value. Our windows boast a value of 1.8, which means they perform three times better than an aluminium framed window with a typical value of 5.4-5.6. And since windows can contribute to between 15-40% energy loss in a building, installing the most energy efficient windows available should be the intelligent homeowner's priority.   Great suggestions and more on double glazed draft proof can be found here

Rehau quality stands for ambition and power, and these ideas are represented well in the Prestige casement upvc window and door system. The thickness of glazing ranges from 5mm to 33 mm. This double glazed window and door system comes with an overlap that measures 8 to 10 mm located between frame and sash, and this overlap not only helps to eliminate water infiltration and dust penetration, but also aids in saving energy consumption. Laminated Glass

Is a sandwich made of one thin layer of plastic Poly Vinyl Butyral between two or more sheets of glass. The PVB sticks with the glass, forms chemical as well as mechanical bonds. When laminated with annealed glass, the layer maintains the geometric integrity of the pane in case of breakage.
Also, it gives acoustic insulation as well as providing protection against damage caused due to UV radiation because it cuts almost 99% of UV radiation present in the sunlight.   A complete guide for double glazed laminated glass can be found here
