Laminated Glass

The world is a looking glass and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face.
-- William Makepeace Thackeray

Is a sandwich made of one piece of plastic Poly Vinyl Butyral between two or more glasses. The PVB sticks with the glass, forms chemical as well as mechanical bonds.
When laminated with annealed glass, the layer maintains the geometric integrity of the pane in case of breakage. Also it gives acoustic insulation as well as gives protection against damage caused due to UV radiation because it cuts almost 99% of UV radiation present in the sunlight.

A Laminated glass is regarded as a safety glass by most of the standards. Laminated glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered. Shopfront glazing and windshields are typically laminated glasses.

Polyvinyl butyral (or PVB) is a resin usually used for applications that require strong binding, optical clarity, adhesion to many surfaces, toughness and flexibility. It is prepared from polyvinyl alcohol by reaction with butyraldehyde. The major application is laminated safety glass for automobile windshields. Tradenames for PVB-films include: BUTACITE, SAFLEX, S-Lec, TROSIFOL

The PVB is always in the thickness of .38 mm And/or the multiple of .38 mm. So the basic nomenclature of laminated glass is XY.Z where X & Y are the thickness of the 2 panes of glass a3 Z is the thickness of the PVB.

The PVB interlayer also gives the glass a much higher sound insulation rating, due to the damping effect, and also blocks 99% of transmitted UV light. Using toughened glass on windshields would be a problem when a small stone hits the windshield at speed, as it would shatter into the small squares making visibility difficult and it would also be likely that the wind would blow the small squares into the driver and passengers.

Properties of Laminated Glass.

  PVB thickness 0.38mm, 0.76mm, 1.14mm, 1.52mm
PVB colors clear, white, gray, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red
  Refractive Index 1.48
Visible Light Transmittance clear -- 89%
  Shading Coefficient clear -- 0.92
UV Screening up to 380 nm -- 99%
  Tensile Strength 3220 psi
  Thermal Conductivity (K value) 0.12 Btu/(ft2hr°F)
  Emissivity 0.9

Float Glass in different thickness is basically used in the form of clear, tinted, reflective, tempered and heat strengthened glass. The PVB exhibits an extraordinary resistance in terms of UV transmission but does not reduce the visible light in the light spectrum.

Laminated Glass Safety:    Ordinary window glass is brittle, breaking into long sharp pieces which can cause serious injuries. The principal feature of Laminated safety glass is that the interlayer absorbs the energy impact and hence resists penetration. Although the glass may break, the glass fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, minimizing the risk of injuries.

Laminated Glass Security:    Burglars often try to break windows to get inside the house or a building and here the laminated glass plays an important role in resisting their intrusion. Even if the glass breaks the interlayer continues to safeguard the building until the glass is replaced.

Sound Reduction with Laminated Glass:    Noise gains easiest entry to homes and buildings through windows and doors. Laminated glass proves an excellent barrier to noise, it has better Sound Transmission Loss as compared to glass of similar thickness in the frequency of 125 Hz to 4000 Hz. Also it eliminates the coincidence dip that is associated with the monolithic glass because of the viscoelastic property of the interlayer material.

Laminated Glass Solar Energy Control:    While natural light is important for us too much sunlight can also mean too much heat gain inside the building. Laminated glass when used in combination with reflective glass, tinted glass or low e glass provides excellent reduction in the Solar Gains as well as reduction of sound transmission through the window.

Laminated Glass UV Control:    The major cause of deterioration and fading of furnishings and pictures is the chemical reaction caused by short-wavelength UV radiation. UV absorbing additives in the interlayer in laminated glass can screen out almost all these damaging rays.

Protection from weather and natural disasters:    If broken, laminated glass remains in its frame, preventing interior damage while reducing flying glass protects people both indoors and outdoors. Areas subjected to heavy winds and rain such as hurricanes or cyclones, buildings often need extra protection. Flying debris carried by these winds can shatter the glass and injure people. Laminated glass can be designed to remain intact and in its frame. Buildings that are situated in areas subjected to heavy winds and rains such as hurrican and cyclones, often need extra protection.

Laminated Glass Durability:    Laminated glass is durable, it maintains its color and its strength for a very long time.

Low visual distortion:    Laminated Glass is usually glazed in an annealed form, avoiding the distortion caused by roller waves in the tempered and heat strengthened glass. So the facades having laminated glass have sharp reflected images and fewer distortions.

Float Glass

Is the most cost effective option because the features of this type of glass are rather basic. Float glass refers to a completely flat plane of clear glass. The term float is derived from the production method, and this type of glass is also often referred to as flat glass.   Get all the facts on double glazed float glass

Toughened Glass

Also known as tempered glass, it is a type of safety glass that has increased strength and will usually shatter in small, square pieces when broken. It is used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations. At home you are likely to find toughened glass in the shower and sliding glass patio doors. For commercial structures, it is used in unframed assemblies such as frameless doors, structurally loaded applications and where there is a danger of human impact. Toughened glass is typically four to six times the strength of annealed glass.   More info on double glazed toughened glass

Tinted Glass

Ordinary tinted glass is popular because it reduces heat gain and carbon emmissions, although it also marginally reduces visible light transmission. High Performance or Low-e tinted glass or spectrally selective tinted glass reduces solar heat gain to below that of ordinary bronze/ gray tint but has a visible transmittance closer to clear glass. The tint has little effect on the U-factor but reduces solar gain considerably, which can reduce the need for air conditioning in the summer. Tinted glass is useful in controlling glare - especially for those windows facing east or north east. Return the sunlight not glare into your home.   Continued on the double glazed tinted glass page

IGUnit Glass

or Double Glazing is described as two or more lites of glass spaced apart and hermetically sealed to form a single glazed unit with an air gap between each lite. As the name suggests, the most important function of and IGU is to improve the thermal performance of glass when used in architectural applications. It is common to find two panel of glass and they are therefore also referred to as double glazing units. Triple glazing units are rare but serve their owners well in very cold climates. Insulated glazing may be framed in a sash or frame. IGU made of glass is called insulated glass.   A complete guide for double glazed igunit glass can be found here

Low E Glass

Low-e glass brings out the best that technology has to offer for improving your views and comfort! A cool, metal oxide coating is applied to clear or tinted glass, so that the appearance and performance are the same regardless of glass thickness. Low-e glass is recommended by many energy efficiency experts as a result of high performance combined with aesthetics. Low-E glass typically cost about 15% more than ordinary glass, but they reduce energy use by as much as 30-50%, by using most of the heat gain in winter but keep the harmful UV rays out during the summer, and when used in insulated glass units - can have even better benefits.
For hot climates, low-E coating should be applied to the outside pane of glass. If the windows are designed to provide heat energy in the winter and keep heat inside the house typical of cold climates, the Low-E coating will maximise benefit by being on the inside pane of glass.   For a detailed discussion on the subject of double glazed low e glass click here

Sealing

Many people have the impression that all silicone gels on the market are the same, but we have found that their properties and, therefore, suitability varies dramatically. Generally, the descriptions of silicone offer little information as to the correct grade and type for a given application, and because of performance variability, there is no one type of silicone sealant that should be used for everything. Using the incorrect silicone or improper use may cause joint failure, contamination of surfaces because of poor application, excessive movement in the sealed joint.   Read more on double glazed sealing
